Alco-Check

Introduction

The consumption of alcohol has a negative influence on the perceptive faculties and capabilities. Even a low blood alcohol concentration results in the limitation of the field of vision. Decisive optical information gets lost.

For this reason no one should ever drive under the influence of alcohol. At the workplace as well as at home the consumption of alcohol might cause dangerous situations or accidents.

Whether someone has drunken too much cannot reliably conclude by his behaviour. The determination of the blood alcohol content by means of blood samples and analysis is not a method used for routine traffic checks. For this reason quick test methods for measurement on the breath alcohol are used during traffic checks, since the breath alcohol allows conclusions about the blood alcohol concentration

However, apart from such checks there are always situations where it is important to know the concentration, for example in the event of residual blood alcohol. The drager alco-check tube can be used for individual orientated measurement of the breath alcohol concentration

Principle of operation of the alco-check tube

The alco-check originates from the well
known Drager detector tube which has been
used by the police force for decades. Alco check is available in the following 2 versions:

0.5% (0.05%)
0.8% (0.08%)

Drager Alco-Check consists of the actual tube and a breathing bag. First the glass tube located in the plastic housing is opened by bending the two flexible ends of the plastic housing. The clear crack shows that the glass tube has been opened at its predetermined breaking point and is now ready for measurement.

Before performing a measurement, the Alco-Check Tube is placed into the opening of the non-inflated breathing bag by turning it such that the imprinted arrow shows to the breathing bag.

The test person blows the exhaled air through
the tube into the breathing bag thus ensuring
that the volume required for the measurement
is drawn through the tube. Should the exhaled
air contain alcohol, the breath alcohol
specific reagent reacts and changes its
colour from yellow to green.

The concentration of the breath alcohol at the moment of testing is characterized by the length of the reagent layer. If the limit value is reached, the green discolouration reaches the blue marking printed on the middle of the tube, if the reading exceeeds the blue marking the blood alcohol concentration has exceeded the limit value.

However, Alco-Check does not show when the alcohol was consumed and in which quantities and whether the alcohol level is still increasing or already decreasing.

Alco-check should only be used no sooner than 15 minutes after alcohol was consumed, otherwise the alcohol in the mouth cavity might falsify the result.

Smoking directly before the test should be avoided as well since it might result in a brown discolouration of the reagent inside the tube.

Advantages of Drager Alco-Check

Safe breaking of the glass tube tips, flexible plastic ends, thus;

 No contact with glass splinters.

 Tube cannot be broken.

No additional adaptation of mouth pieces required.

Tube cannot be inserted into the breathing bag in the wrong direction

Disposal method available; return of the tube at the sales outlet.
