| After testing many of the leading mains
overvoltage and surge protectors on the market today, Barclays Bank
have specified Furse Electronic Systems Protectors as THE effective
solution to transient overvoltages for problem areas within Barclays.
The problems transient overvoltages ('surges', 'spikes',
etc) cause to computer based equipment are well known - failures ...
crashes ... lock-ups ... and unexplained errors.
But how do you choose an effective transient protector
from amidst the bewildering array of products currently available?
Barclays took the common sense approach: effective
transient protection involves restricting the 'let-through' voltage
(that portion of the transient overvoltage which gets past the protector
and hence reaches equipment) to a low and harmless level.
With this in mind, nine products, all claiming to
protect electronic equipment against mains borne transients were tested
for performance in accordance with the leading international test transient
(ANSI now IEEE C62.41).
As a result of which Barclays Engineering Specification
now dictates the use of:
- Furse ESP 240/ESP 415 for power distribution
boards,
or
- Furse ESP Micro Conditioner for plug-in
applications
Incidentally, of those tested, Furse ESP products were
the only ones which proved to be both effective and electrically safe.
