The transducer is located at the top of the tank or silo, transmitting pulses down to the product surface. The time taken to receive the reflected pulse is measured by the electronics and is proportional to the distance between the face of the transducer and the product, provided the density of the coupling medium remains constant . The reflection time is then converted into a level value for display/output purposes.
Detection of temperature changes, the most common parameter affecting the coupling medium density, is made within the transducer, and is periodically sampled by the electronics.
